"Gassho-zukuri" is an archaic style of architecture which was once very popular in Japan.
Now the buildings of the style remains mostly in 'Shirakawa-go' in Gifu and 'Gokayama' in Toyama.
Both cities are so far away from Tokyo that there are not many chances to see them.
But at this restaurant, you can not only observe the style in less than an hour from Shinjuku but also you can also enjoy chef's specialty "Hambrug"!
The restaurant locates in a quiet residential area a little away from the station.
A 300 years old majestic building welcomes you.
If you walk up the stone steps from the gate to the entrance, you may feel excited as if you are invited to some special extraordinary spaces.

At the entrance, you can see the high space of the ceiling, unique to "Gassho-zukuri".
The hospitality of the staff is elegant, So makes you feel the height of the formalities of restaurant.
Take off your shoes and let 's go up.
The space to eat is first floor.
The second floor is a pleasure to see later.
While walking around the corridor, you can also explain the building from the staff.
Beams made with a single tree longer than 10 meters are impressive.
It seems to be valuable timber that is not readily available now.
By the way, all the timber are black in"Gassho-zukuri", because residents in old burned fire in "Irori: fireplace in Japan", that made them sooty.
(The purpose of burning fire is for insect repellent. Because the roof is made of grass!)
The large hall is spacious room that a maximum of 50 people can sit, and there is "Irori" in the center.
There are four private rooms of various sizes for 4, 6, and 8 people.
The table and the chair also fit the building, a heavy style. You can eat in a quiet spaces.
Reasonable dish with seasonal vegetables and the all beef
The course of 3000 yen has 6 dishes including dessert.
First we start with appetizer with 3 items with seasonal vegetables.
After the appetizers, soup using seasonal vegetables.
And a smoked duck sushi.
The salad of the photograph was of summer, and it contained orange in sweet tomato.
It was good with surprising when putting a knife.
The main is a 'hamburg' cooked with charcoal fire.
By burning all beef with charcoal fire, it keeps the umami of beef.
You can chose from rare to welldon as your favorite like steak.
I recommend rare. You can enjoy the tasty fat and softness of beef.
Eat dessert in a room on the second floor
After meals you can enjoy desserts and drinks on the second floor tea room.
This room has a higher ceiling, so you can see the characteristic stracture of 'Gassho-zukuri'.
'Gassho' means the form of hand in hand, so that the roof of this building looks like that, it came to be called 'Gassho-zukuri'.
It especially seems in heavy snowing area that because it has such a steep angle so snow falls naturally from the roof.
The roof pillars and beams are tied with rope to absorb the weight of the snow.
This is built without using any nails! wow.
